Watch The World Glide Right By As You Relax In Your Canopy Swing

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Wouldn’t it be nice to relax - rain or shine, day or night, alone or in a group - on a big, comfortable glider swing?

This do-it-yourself project makes it possible. It combines many of the best features of outdoor glider swings. It seats four adults on wide bench seats and has a canopy for shade or shelter from the rain, a table with cut-outs for drinks, and a gentle swinging motion. Best of all, it’s easy to build, even for novices who own only a few basic tools.

The swing is built from fir, plywood and galvanized pipe. Most of the wood cuts are straight cuts, but the curved cuts are easy to size and saw with the aid of full-size patterns. After tracing and sawing the pieces (there are a lot of them), build the frame first and install the pipe that supports the bench section. Then build and hang the bench section and attach the canopy and table. To finish, apply paint or stain.

Because it’s large, it’s a good idea to assemble the swing where it will be used. The completed swing measures about 8 feet long by 6-plus feet wide by 8 feet high.

The Canopy Glider Swing plan, No. 818, is $6.50 and includes detailed step-by-step directions with 15 photos, full-size traceable patterns, exploded diagrams and a complete shopping list and cutting schedule.

In addition, a catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects, including other swing and glider projects, is available for $3.95. Prices include sales tax, postage and handling.
