Classy Qbs Expected For Classic
Somebody selected an appropriate name for this charity golf tournament at the Coeur d’Alene Resort: The Bank of America Quarterback Classic.
Whether or not the two-day (June 30, July 1) event will provide classic golf is open to debate, but it’s unlikely any other event will draw such a classic field of current and former NFL quarterbacks.
It seemed impressive enough when former Washington State quarterbacks Mark Rypien, Drew Bledsoe, Jack Thompson and Timm Rosenbach announced their participation in an event designed to raise $200,000 to endow a minority student-athlete scholarship to WSU.
But that sparkling foursome is but a fraction of the attraction as most of the remainder of the field was announced this week.
Also scheduled to test the resort course is the NFL’s all-time leading scorer, George Blanda, a Hall-of-Famer. Also on hand will be probable future Hall-of-Famers John Elway and Warren Moon.
It will also provide a homecoming for Coeur d’Alene High’s John Friesz, now with the Seattle Seahawks.
The list also includes: Steve Bartkowski, Chris Chandler, Kerry Collins, Tom Flick, Gus Frerotte, Jim Hart, Stan Humphries, Sonny Jurgenson, Dave Krieg, Daryl Lamonica, Neil Lomax, Dan McGwire, Earl Morrall, Neil O’Donnell, Jim Plunkett, Sonny Sixkiller and Jim Zorn.
On June 30, three quarterbacks will join a major sponsor to form 12 groups for a tournament to be televised nationally on Prime Network.
Some 1,200 gallery tickets will be available at $50 each, which will provide for a water taxi from the resort to the course, a continental breakfast and admission to the event. (Call 208-765-4000, ext. 7134 for information).
The following day, each quarterback will join a foursome of team sponsors for a scramble tournament. A limited number of sponsorships is available. (Call Ron Davis, 509-335-0214.)
Team sponsors receive a foursome in the tournament, team shirts, a prize package, eight banquet invitations, admission to an exclusive autograph session and gallery tickets for Friday and Saturday’s events.
