Obituaries

Robert Bishop Spokane

Memorial service for Robert G. Bishop, 74, is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. There will be private inurnment.

Mr. Bishop died Wednesday at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene.

He was born in Spokane. During the summer months he lived at Twin Lakes, Idaho.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and retired from the Washington State Highway Department after 29 years. He later worked for a local contractor for two years.

His first wife, Ruby, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Myra Bishop; three daughters, Sandra Magney and Debra Leigh, both of Spokane, and Rickie Esslinger of Fargo, N.D.; six stepsons, James Reed of Utah, Russell Reed of Twin Lakes, Allen Reed of Seattle, Greg and Chris Reed, both of Spokane, and William Brinnon of Texas; one stepdaughter, Pamela Jappesen of Rathdrum, Idaho; two sisters, Gladys Elder of Spokane and Mae Smith of Bellingham; 23 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Allen Johnson Spokane

Service for Allen C. “Al” Johnson, 56, will be at 2 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson, a 29-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He had worked for Haskins Steel for 25 years and had served in the Navy.

He was a member of the Valley Eagles.

Mr. Johnson’s survivors include his companion, Joanie Allen; his mother, Mildred Carroll of Chehalis, Wash.; one sister, Carol Johnson of Bremerton; and one brother, Leslie Johnson of Springfield, Ore.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Frances Revard Cusick, Wash.

Memorial service for Frances M. Revard, 68, will be at 1 p.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash.

Mrs. Revard died Monday at home.

She was born in Aitkin, Minn.

She moved to the Cusick area in 1947 and was a teacher’s aide for many years, and the principal’s secretary for the Cusick School District. She retired in 1989.

She was a member of the Fire District No. 5 Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Cusick Community Development Association and the Locke Grange.

Her husband, Donald Revard, died April 1.

Survivors include four daughters, Donna Revard of Hawaii, Susan Bordwell and Kathy Revard of Spokane, and Carol Polster of Newman Lake; three sons, Jeff and Terry Revard, both of Spokane, and Tim Revard of Mount Vernon, Wash.; two sisters, Shirley Peterson of Minnesota and Irene Krapko of Four Lakes; seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Dr. Clarence Lyon, M.D. Spokane

Memorial service for Dr. Clarence L. Lyon, longtime Spokane pediatrician, will be at 2 p.m. today at Heritage Congregational Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Lyon, 92, died Wednesday.

He was born in North Dakota.

He graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago and was a pediatrician in Spokane for 54 years.

During World War II, he served as an Army physician in hospitals in England and France.

Dr. Lyon was a member of the Spokane Medical Society, a trustee for the Washington State Medical Association and a chairman of the Washington State Board of Health. He was also active at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children and was a charter member of Heritage Congregational Church.

His wife, Marjorie Lyon, died in 1984.

He is survived by one sister, Peggie Matthews.

Esther Muhs Harrison Flats, Idaho

Memorial service for Esther C. Muhs, 86, will be at 11 a.m. May 27 at Harrison Community Baptist Church. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Summitt, Idaho, Mrs. Muhs died Monday at home.

She graduated from high school in Modesto, Calif., and received a teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School.

She taught school in Spokane and Sandpoint.

She and her husband, Ted Muhs, moved to Harrison Flats from Spokane in 1945. She retired in 1970. Her husband died in 1981.

Mrs. Muhs enjoyed sewing, baking bread and knitting and was an avid reader.

She was a member of the Harrison Community Baptist Church, Harrison Senior Citizens and the Idaho Association of Retired Teachers.

Survivors include one son, Fred Muhs of Harrison Flats; two daughters, Janice Thompson of Thompson Lake, Idaho, and Roberta Arnzen of Harrison Flats; one sister, Lois Walraven of Santa Rosa, Calif.; eight grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Timothy Johnson Spokane

Graveside service for Timothy Jay Johnson, 34, is set for 11 a.m. Monday at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Johnson died Thursday.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1979 and was a warehouseman for Safeway stores.

He was a member of Salem Luthern Church.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his parents, Michael and Liann Johnson of Spokane; two brothers, Guy Johnson of Spokane and Ken Johnson of Liberty Lake; and two sisters, Cathy Baskin of Cheney and Cindy Kennedy of Medical Lake.

Shane Haegen Coeur d’Alene

Service for Shane Christopher Haegen, 8, will be at 3 p.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Shane died Thursday at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.

He was born in Las Vegas, Nev.

He and his mother moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1989. He was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 4.

He was a third-grader at Borah School and enjoyed baseball, basketball, bike riding, swimming and art.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Anderson of Coeur d’Alene; his father, Christopher Haegen; two brothers, Craig Daughenbaugh and Kenneth Anderson, and two sisters, Chandra Palm and Jennifer Anderson, all of Coeur d’Alene; and his grandparents, Betty Harless of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Paul and Joanne Smith of Pleasanton, Calif.

Thelma Lloyd Young Spokane

Memorial service for Thelma Lloyd Young, 87, is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Park.

A lifetime Spokane resident, she died May 5.

Mrs. Young, who received ballet training in Chicago and San Francisco, started teaching ballet in 1921. She owned the Thelma Lloyd Young Ballet Academy, which opened in 1956.

She retired in the 1980s.

Her husband, Mervin “Be” Young, died in 1968.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Margaret Sammons Spokane

Service for Margaret E. Sammons, 76, is set for 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Born in Northport, Wash., Mrs. Sammons died May 5.

She moved to Spokane as a child and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

She was a 70-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Her husband, Charles Sammons, died in 1990.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry Sammons of Renton, Wash., and Ken Sammons of Spokane; one sister, Raona Bowen of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Scott Gaskill St. Maries

Memorial service for Scott L. Gaskill, 41, is planned for 11 a.m Monday at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries.

Mr. Gaskill was born in Clarkston and died Tuesday from a heart attack.

He graduated from St. Maries High School and worked for the Idaho Department of Lands and for Roy’s Meats in St. Maries. Most recently he was doing electronic repair for area businesses.

He enjoyed reading, politics and playing the stock market.

He was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church.

He is survived by his brother, Pat Gaskill of Rathdrum, Idaho.

David Ward Valleyford

Service for David L. Ward, 18, is set for 1 p.m. Monday with burial to follow at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ward died Wednesday in a traffic accident near Freeman.

He was born in Redland, Calif.

He moved to Spokane 10 years ago and was a senior at Freeman High School, where he participated in track, cross country, choir and yearbook staff.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spokane 12th Ward.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Pat Ward; two brothers, Doug Ward of Melba, Idaho, and Tom Ward of Valleyford; three sisters, Sally Washburn of Spokane, Paula Nichols of Mesa, Ariz., and Nancy Wolff of San Antonio, Texas; and his grandparents, L.L. Ward of Yucaipa, Calif., and Helen Malpass of Kaysville, Utah.

Oliver ‘Al’ Hall Spokane

Memorial service for Oliver Albert “Al” Hall, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at Westview Congregational Church, where he was a member. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hall, who died Wednesday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He was a driver for Spokane Transit Authority for 42 years before retiring in the late 1970s.

He was a member of the Loon Lake (Wash.) Moose and the Spokane Eagles Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Catherine Hall; one daughter, Gae Stroud of Clive, Iowa; and four grandchildren.

Blanche Brumley Spokane

Service for Blanche Brumley, 89, is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Miss Brumley, a retired teacher, died Wednesday.

She was born in Lawrenceburg, Ky., and had lived in Spokane for more than 53 years.

She taught in Montana in one-room schoolhouses before moving to Spokane in the early 1940s.

She was a member of North Hill Christian Church.

Miss Brumley is survived by three nieces, including Darlene Schlosser of Spokane; and two nephews.

Thelma Lupfer Spokane

Memorial service for Thelma P. Lupfer, 83, was held Friday at Audubon Park United Methodist Church.

Born in Valley Falls, Kan., Mrs. Lupfer died Monday.

A homemaker, she had lived in Spokane for more than 36 years.

She is survived by two sons, Gary Lupfer of Spokane and Lynn Lupfer of Republic, Wash.; one daughter, Susie Choat of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
