Pitching Sets The Tone In Gsl District Play
Shadle Park pitcher Chris Wilson faced just 25 batters, four above the seven-inning minimum, and the Highlanders used an eight-run sixthinning to beat Rogers 10-0 on Friday.
The game was the first in the District 8 George Gee Pontiac Greater Spokane League Baseball Tournament at Seafirst Stadium.
In the second game, Gonzaga Prep beat Central Valley 3-0 as Bullpups pitcher Forrest Higgins held the Bears to two hits.
Shadle and G-Prep will play today at Seafirst at 11 a.m. The winner will play Ferris at 2 p.m., with that winner qualifying for regionals and a date with regular-season champion University Tuesday in a seeding battle.
Wilson and the Highlanders (12-6) led 2-0 when they pulled away from Rogers (8-9) with their big inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Shadle’s Steve Schaber hit a two-run double, Christian Ross had an RBI single, Darin Talotti a two-run homer, Garrett Wideman an RBI double and Joe Walters an RBI triple.
For the Bullpups (10-7), Matt
Comfort had an RBI single and Austin McDonald had an RBI on a fielder’s choice for G-Prep’s first runs of the game.
Softball
Rogers earned a trip to the regional playoffs with a 1-0 win against Gonzaga Prep at Franklin Park. The Pirates (13-4) take on University on Monday at Franklin Park at 3:45 p.m. for seeding to the regional.
Pirates pitcher Traci Moore earned her seventh shutout this season with a four-hit performance. She also scored the winning run.
Moore singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Shannon Zahrowski’s sacrifice fly.
The Bullpups finish 7-10.
The second game of a scheduled doubleheader between Central Valley and North Central was halted by rain in the bottom of the third inning with the Indians ahead 2-1.
It will be completed Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Indians at bat with runners on first and third base. The winner plays Mead at 6 p.m. for regional seeding.
Bi-County softball
Davenport beat Reardan 11-10 and Almira/Coulee-Hartline 17-5 to get the No. 1 seed to the district playoffs. Reardan’s 5-4 win over ACH gives the Indians the No. 2 seed while the Warriors get the No. 3 seed. The three-way playoff was held to break a regular-season tie.
