Shultz Opens Heptathlon With Three Solid Showings

Washington State University sophomore Heidi Shultz set personal bests in three events en route to her best first-day point total during the heptathlon portion of the Pacific-10 Conference track and field championships Friday at Tucson, Ariz.

Shultz finished with 2,938 points to place seventh in the field of nine entrants.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Schultz ran 15.22 despite a near fall after she smashed the first hurdle. She also had personal bests in the shot put and 200 meters. She put the shot 37 feet, 10 inches and ran a 25.64-second 200.

WSU freshman Leo Slack had three personal-best marks among the first five events in the decathlon, scoring 3,909 points, his highest first-day total in three decathlons.

Slack’s bests came in the 100, a sixth-place 11.13; the long jump, a second-place 23-10; and the 400, 52.12 for 13th.

NCIC regionals

Whitworth’s men and women trail the field after the first day of the NCIC track and field championships in Tacoma. The men scored 5 points while the women scored two. Central Washington leads the men, Puget Sound the women.

CCS softball

At Highline, Spokane won 8-5 and 5-1. The Sasquatch (24-2 NWAACC, 25-7) wrap up the regular season at Shoreline on Sunday.
