Wheat Kings Fall Short

Compiled From Wire Services

Brian Berard, the Detroit Jr. Red Wings razzle-dazzle defenseman, showed why many believe he’ll be the top pick at this year’s NHL entry draft.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Berard broke open a hard-hitting game with a goal at 8:29 of the second period as Detroit hung on for a 4-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Memorial Cup.

The loss dropped Brandon to 1-1 in round-robin play.
