Coach Jilts U.S. Team
Carlos Queiroz, in an abrupt turnaround, rejected an offer to coach the U.S. national soccer team and agreed to a three-year contract extension with Sporting Lisbon of the Portuguese first division.
U.S. Soccer Federation executive director Hank Steinbrecher confirmed that Queiroz had been offered the job. Queiroz notified Sporting Lisbon’s management last Friday that he was resigning at the end of the season. He announced his contract extension on Monday after leaving an all-night bargaining session in Lisbon.
Steve Sampson will remain interim U.S. head coach through next month.
