Mead, Rogers In Title Game

It’ll be No. 1 vs. No. 3 when the Greater Spokane League District softball championship is decided tonight at Franklin Park.

Regular-season champion Mead will take on No. 3 Rogers at 6 for the title and top seeding into this weekend’s regional play in Moses Lake.

Mead earned its title-game spot with a 6-0 win over North Central while Rogers knocked off No. 2 seeded University 5-2.

University will face North Central at 3:45 today in a seeding game for third and fourth to regionals.

The Rogers Pirates broke its game open with three runs in the sixth inning, when Jamie Christiansen doubled off the center fielder’s glove with the bases loaded to clear the bases.

Jennifer Wells had a two-run single in the fourth inning. Traci Moore pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and retired nine in a row to end the game for the Pirates.

Mead scored four runs in the third inning, which included Stacey Armitage’s three-run triple, against NC.

Holly Vanwert gave up one hit and struck out eight and walked five. Wendy Ziegler had a two-run single in the second inning for the Panthers.

North Central advanced to regionals for the first time in six years by beating Central Valley 3-2 in the completion of a game that was suspended Friday by rain.

The Indians’ Tera Young scored the game winner in the bottom of the sixth inning. She tripled, but continued home on an error as the CV shortstop bobbled the relay from the outfield.

Whitman County softball

Garfield-Palouse advanced as the No. 1 seed to district by beating Rosalia 13-3 in the title game.

The Vikings (20-0) were led by Bree Roper with four hits and two RBIs. Shari Gearhart had three RBIs and a two-run home run in the first inning.

District 7B baseball

Curlew is the No. 1 seed to regionals with an 8-4 win over Reardan at West Valley.

The Indians are the No. 2 seed.

Davenport clinched the No. 3 seed with a 12-9 win over Northwest Christian.

At East Valley, Northwest Christian earned the No. 4 seed, beating St. George’s 5-2 for the final spot.

Curlew’s Curt Nelson had two hits, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs. Jerame Thurik struck out nine and walked one.

In Davenport’s win, Marty Parsons had three hits and Paul Hansen had two hits and three RBIs as the Gorillas scored all their runs in the first five innings.

Jeremy Affeldt helped NWC against St. George’s with two doubles, including one that drove in two runs in the first inning. He also went the distance pitching, striking out eleven and walking four.

St. George’s had advanced to play the Crusaders by defeating Northport 23-11 in a loser-out game.

GSL tennis

Greater Spokane League boys’ and girls’ district tournaments wind up today at Central Valley at 3:30.

In girls’ finals, Darcy Ruemping and K.C. Richards of Ferris meet Kristy Kimbrough and Emily Stuenkel of University. In singles, Amy Fong of Mead is awaiting a finals opponent.

Lewis and Clark teammates Spencer Piston and Dave Farley will play for the boys’ singles title. The doubles is an all-Mead affair, with Jon Wrigley-Eric Donovan meeting Mike Foiles-Brett Kaiser.

The top four in both doubles and singles advance to regionals in Kennewick beginning Friday.

NEA tennis

The girls’ Northeast A tournament sent four individuals and four teams to district at Riverside.

Bernice Stime of Riverside won the singles title and the No. 1 seed to district while Crystal Jett and Katy Angermeier of Medical Lake won the doubles along with the No. 1 seed to district.

Frontier golf

Neil Schnider helped Clarkston to a District 7 AA/Frontier League team title by capturing medalist honors in the tournament that wound up Monday at the Colville Elks golf course.

Schnider had a 1-over-par 73 at Colville to go with a 1-over 71 earlier at Liberty Lake to post a 144 and two-shot win over teammate Darrin Eberhardt (72-74).

Clarkston had a winning team score of 765 ahead of WV’s 809. Following were Pullman (812), Cheney (823), East Valley (848) and Colville (879).
