Patrick Johnstone Spokane

Memorial service for Patrick Charles Johnstone, former owner of Spokane Seed Co., will be at 2 p.m. today at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnstone, 71, died Thursday.

He was born in Norwich, England, and had served in the Royal Air Force.

He became a naturalized American citizen in 1956.

Mr. Johnstone had lived in Spokane since 1947 and had served as president of Spokane Seed Co. for 35 years. His son, Peter Johnstone, became the president of the company in 1989.

He received the President’s “E” Award for excellence in developing the export market.

Mr. Johnstone was past president of the Pacific Northwest Pea Growers and Dealers Association, the National Split Pea Association, the American Dry Pea and Lentil Association, and The Spokane Club.

He served on the Presidential Advisory Council of Eastern Washington University, the President’s District Export Council, the National Maritime Council and the Small Business Administration Advisory Council. He also was vice president of the Washington State International Trade Fair and liaison officer for the Royal Air Force Association.

His wife, Gayle, died in 1973.

He is survived by one daughter, Angela Johnstone Fontaine of Renton, Wash; two sons, Peter Johnstone of Spokane and David Johnstone of Scotland; and one grandson.

Agnes Oligher Davenport, Wash.

Service for Agnes C. “Aggie” Oligher, 72, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport.

Mrs. Oliger died Thursday.

She was born in Morgantown, Ky.

Mrs. Oligher and her husband, Clifford, ranched in Rocklyn, Wash., before moving to Davenport in 1967.

She worked at Lincoln Hospital in Davenport, for 11 years and for Grant County Services for 15 years. She retired from Okanogan County Services in 1992.

Mrs. Oligher was a member of the Lincoln County Cowbelles Association, the United Methodist Church and the Wilson Grange.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Clifford Oligher; one daughter, Carole Rickert of Moses Lake; one foster son, Allan Savelesky of La Mesa, Calif.; one brother, Albert Massey of Okachobee, Fla.; four granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Richard Morley Spokane

Service for Richard P. Morley, 30, was Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel with inurnment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Morley’s body was found May 5 near Eloika Lake. The cause of death has not been determined.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from Newport (Wash.) High School. He worked as a tree topper.

He is survived by his father, William Morley of Hawaii; two brothers, Pat Morley of Orlando, Fla., and Gary Morley of Lancaster, Calif.; and three sisters, Barb Rieger of Centralia, Wash., Theresa Harmon of Gainesville, Ga., and Michele Gibson of Tampa, Fla.

Linda Culley Sandpoint

Service for Linda A. Culley, 87, will be at 11 a.m. today at Coffelt Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Culley died Thursday.

She was born in Melrose, Wis.

She moved to Culbertson, Mont., in 1909 and to Sandpoint in 1919.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

Mrs. Culley was an outstanding cook and gardener.

Her husband, Hobart Culley, died in 1968.

She is survived by one son, Roy Culley of Burbank, Wash.; three daughters, Lois Weisz and Evalyn Finney, both of Sandpoint, and Carolyn Brown of Sagle, Idaho; one brother, Wayne Hagadone of Sandpoint; 16 grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren.

Earl Stovall Hayden, Idaho

Service for Earl F. Stovall, 83, will be at 10 a.m. today at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake, Idaho.

Mr. Stovall died Friday at Kootenai Medical Center.

He was born in Marshfield, Mo.

Mr. Stovall retired and moved to North Idaho in 1978.

He was a Southern Baptist deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member.

He was a bass fisherman and a former horseshoe pitching champion in Missouri.

Mr. Stovall’s wife, Juanita, died in 1988.

He is survived by one son, Earl Stovall of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Patricia Mills of Spirit Lake and Shirley Sullins of Viburnum, Mo.; one sister, Mildred Branstetter, one half-brother, Phillip Stovall, and one half-sister, Deborah , all of Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren.

Carmen Cunningham Rathdrum, Idaho

Service for Carmen Cunningham, 69, is set for 1 p.m. today at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum.

Mrs. Cunningham, who was born in Hurricane, Utah, died Thursday.

She and her husband, Clarence Cunningham, moved to Rathdrum from Ogden, Utah. He died in 1975.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and taught the primary and young women’s classes within the church.

She was an avid gardener and liked to bake bread.

Survivors include four sons, Ron, Wade and Kerry Cunningham, all of Rathdrum, and Shelby Cunningham of Boise, Idaho; three daughters, Lynada Pyeatt of Rathdrum, Shirley Cunningham of Spokane and Roberta Cunningham of Sprague, Wash.; one sister, Lorraine Davis of Cedar City, Utah; 15 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Doreen Gramps Spokane

Memorial service for P. Doreen Gramps, 70, was Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment was at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Gramps, who was born in Coleman, Alberta, died Thursday.

She worked as a nurse’s aide at Deaconess Medical Center before retiring in 1984.

Mrs. Gramps was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her husband, James Gramps; one son, Steve Dennis of Yachats, Ore.; one daughter, Melinda Dennis of Seattle; and one grandchild.

Her first husband, Gordon Dennis, preceded her in death.

Denton Nelson Spokane

Private inurnment for Denton John Nelson, 86, will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nelson, who was born in Peach, Wash., died Wednesday.

He had lived in Spokane for 63 years and was the previous owner of Graham Shade Co. He retired in 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Rodgers Nelson; one son, Conley “Buzz” Nelson of Medford, Ore.; one daughter, Judy Bailor of Cape Coral, Fla.; one stepson, John Rodgers, and three stepdaughters, Kristina, Kandace, and Kassandra Wheeler, all of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Lyle Sheets Spokane

Memorial service for Lyle E. Sheets, 36, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sheets died Saturday.

He was born Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Mr. Sheets had served in the Army and had lived in Spokane for 15 years.

He had worked for McCoy’s Arts and Crafts for the past 10 years.

He is survived by his wife, Gayla; one stepson, Tim, and his father, Marvin, both of Spokane; his mother, Leona of Bakersfield, Calif.; and three sisters.

Estella Tiffany Spokane

Memorial service for Estella N. Tiffany, 93, is set for 2 p.m. today at Knox Presbyterian Church with private burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tiffany, a retired Whitworth College professor, died Thursday.

Born in Perry, Mo., she graduated from North Central High School and was a longtime Spokane resident. She was an elder at Knox Presbyterian Church.

She retired from Whitworth College in 1967 as director of the student teaching program.

Her husband, Frank Tiffany, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Leslie Haines of Pullman; three granddaughters and five greatgrandchildren.

Harriet Erickson Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Harriet Erickson, 81, was Monday at Bonners Ferry Funeral Home with burial at Grandview Cemetery.

Mrs. Erickson died May 7 at the Boundary County Nursing Home in Bonners Ferry.

She was born in Rhame, N.D.

She and her husband, Melvin Erickson, moved to Moyie Springs, Idaho, and homesteaded with Melvin’s father. She and her husband cut cord wood for a living.

Mrs. Erickson played the guitar and received ribbons for her oil paintings. She had built a picket fence and an outbuilding.

She and her husband fished together following his retirement.

Her husband died in 1990.

Survivors include three daughters, Eleanor Erickson and Joanne Thompson, both of Bonners Ferry, and Ingrid Spears of Cheney; two sisters, Frances Hosier of Carson City, Nev., and Viola Topness of Preston, Minn.; one brother, Homer Duff of Hawthorne, Nev.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Charles ‘Dave’ Hopkins Spokane

Memorial service for Charles “Dave” Hopkins, 68, was Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Born in St. John, Wash., Mr. Hopkins died Thursday.

He had worked as a logger, roofer and a hard-rock miner.

Mr. Hopkins was a member of the Deer Park Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; two daughters, Kathy Jausoro of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Elaine Ferguson of Coeur d’Alene; three sons, Dave Hopkins of Spokane, Steve Hopkins of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Rob Hopkins of Deer River, Minn.; four stepdaughters, Mary Lang, Lynette Kind, Veronica Howard and Nancy Russian, all of Spokane; two brothers, Carl Hopkins of Spokane and Eugene Hopkins of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; one sister, Marie McCartney of Spokane; 15 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Louis Weiner Seattle

Graveside service for former Spokane resident, Louis Maurice Weiner, 85, was Monday at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue, Wash.

Mr. Weiner died Thursday.

He was born in New York and moved to Spokane as an infant.

In Spokane, he operated Weiner’s Grocery for many years.

He moved to the Seattle area four years ago.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah; one son, Mel Weiner of Bellevue; one brother, Phil Weiner of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Mary Hutton Spokane

Funeral Mass for Mary G. Hutton, 81, was Monday at St. Charles Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Hutton, who died Thursday, was born in British Columbia.

A longtime Spokane resident, she was a homemaker.

Her husband, Burt Hutton, died in 1966.

Survivors include one son, James Hutton; one daughter, Barbara Cossette, both of Spokane; six grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

She was a member of St. Charles Parish, the Philomathea, Sacred Heart Service League, Morning Star Boys Ranch and the Greater Gonzaga Guild.

Mary Humbyrd Spokane

No service will be held for Mary I. Humbyrd. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Humbyrd, 60, died Thursday.

She was born in Crosby, N.D.

Mrs. Humbyrd was a cook in nursing homes and had lived in Spokane for 45 years.

She is survived by three sons, Dan, Tad and Keith Turpin, and one daughter, Deborah Siedeman, all of Spokane; her mother, Edna Gallagher of Spokane; three brothers, Tom Gallagher of Spokane, Leo Gallagher of Minnesota and Hank Gallagher of Loon Lake, Wash.; and one grandson.

Lonnie ‘Ray’ Whitson Spokane

Graveside service for Lonnie “Ray” Whitson, 59, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Milner Cemetery in Troy, Mont. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Whitson, a 20-year Spokane resident, died Friday.

He was born in Bowlegs, Okla.

He is survived by his wife, Lily Whitson; three daughters, Carla Farfax of Sagle, Idaho, and Carrie Boudreau and Cheryl Whitson, both of Spokane; two brothers, Charles Whitson of Polson, Mont., and Don Whitson of Libby, Mont.; two sisters, Patti Hansen of Kalispell, Mont., and Barbara Daniels of Troy; and six grandchildren.

Eva Hendrickson Spokane

Service for Eva Hendrickson, 98, was Monday at Spokane Valley Baptist Church. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park.

Mrs. Hendrickson died Friday.

She was born in Deer Park and was a longtime Spokane resident.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Baptist Church, Women of the Moose and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Her husband, Paul Hendrickson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Holman of Spokane; one brother, Fred Ellsworth Jr. of Deer Park; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Gay Lust Spokane

Graveside service for Gay C. Lust, 86, was Sunday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lust died March 9.

Born in Endicott, Wash., he had lived in Spokane for 50 years and was a commercial painter.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Painters Union Local 269 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474.

Mr. Lust served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by one brother, Reuben Lust of Spokane.

Etta Johannes Spokane

Graveside service For Etta G. Johannes, 81, was Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Johannes, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She had worked as a lens grinder.

She is survived by two nieces and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
