Mead Overcomes Rogers
GSL softball
Mead has owned Rogers this season. Once again, the Panthers saved their best for last. Once again, Holly Vanwert helped break Pirate hearts.
Mead pulled off a dramatic three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to defeat Rogers 3-2, earning the Greater Spokane League’s No. 1 seed to the regional playoffs.
At Franklin Park, with one swing of the bat, the Panthers’ Vanwert hit a triple to drive in all of Mead’s runs.
There were two outs when Vanwert drilled her triple. Vanwert also pitched, earning her third win of the season against Rogers ace Traci Moore.
The Panthers (16-1) beat the Pirates (14-5) in each of three meetings this season. Rogers will be the No. 2 seed to regionals, Friday and Saturday at Moses Lake.
It’s the second straight year the Panthers have entered regional play as the GSL’s top seed.
Dating to the last six regular games of the 1994 season, Mead has posted a 26-2 record.
Also at Franklin Park on Tuesday, North Central defeated University 5-2 to earn the GSL’s No. 3 seed to regionals. The Titans (13-5) are the No. 4 seed.
NC (11-7) scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth.
Indians pitcher Denise Devereaux struck out five and walked one.
The Indians finished last season with a 6-10 record.
