China Vaulters Set Mark

Compiled From Wire Services

Zhong Guiqing and Sun Caiyen both set the world record in the women’s pole vault of 13 feet, 4 1/2 inches at the China National Championships.

The previous mark of 13-4 1/4 was set by another Chinese vaulter, Cai Weiyan, this year.

Zhong cleared 13-4 1/2 on her first attempt, while Sun made it on her second try. Thus, Zhong was the winner and Sun the runner-up, although both will share the record.

Morocco’s Said Aouita, the world record-holder at 2,000 meters, withdrew from Sunday’s New York Games because of a pulled leg muscle.

The 35-year-old Aouita, making a comeback this year after three years of inactivity, was to compete in the 3,000 meters in the Grand Prix meet at Columbia University.
