Sporadic Fighting Around Sarajevo

Compiled From Wire Services

Sarajevo front lines were at their quietest in three days Thursday, but sporadic shelling and sniping killed at least two civilians and wounded seven.

Two Russian peacekeepers stepped on mines in the Serb-held suburb of Grbavica, bringing the casualty toll to 11.

Most devastating was a mortar shell that slammed into a marketplace, killing a man and wounding six other people. Snipers killed a man and wounded another in two separate shootings.

The killing continued even as government and Serb commanders pledged not to resume fighting unless attacked. The promises followed the most vicious battles in Sarajevo in more than two years.
