Peace Lutheran Breaking Ground For New Building

Ward Sanderson Correspondent

Sometimes, you just need a little elbow room.

That’s what people at Peace Lutheran Church found after 13 years in their current facility. It’s not that the sanctuary itself became too small. Office and classroom space, though, was at such a premium that even scheduling a simple meeting on Sunday became an exercise in elite diplomacy.

“We had a multi-purpose office,” said the Rev. Dennis Andersen. “It was a nursery, classroom, meeting room, kitchen and a pastor’s office.”

Two years ago, the congregation decided enough was enough. The church sold a parsonage and took up special offerings to raise money for construction of a new addition. Now, the church will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday, taking the first step in putting the sardine blues behind them for good. The ceremony happens at noon at the church, 4124 N. Harvard Road.

Andersen said the building is currently scheduled to be completed by the year’s end. The new structure will include Sunday school classrooms, a fellowship area, additional office space, a nursery, storage space and a separate pastor’s office.

“We’ll actually be able to hold more than one event at once,” Andersen said, laughing.
