The Slice So, Those Free Parking Meters Weren’t Such A Terrific Idea?

Paul Turner Staff Writer

OK, here’s our localized Claude “Casablanca” Rains impression:

We’re shocked, SHOCKED, to learn that yanking the parking meters from the downtown core was a bad idea.

Let’s all hum Petula Clark’s greatest hit: “What’s the best reason to visit downtown Spokane? The people. What’s the best reason to avoid it? The people.” - Brian and LaDawn Heywood, Deer Park

And here’s part of Mary Alice Grace’s list of reasons to come downtown: The river, the park, historic architecture, the restaurants and “Retail clerks are REAL (as differentiated from PLASTIC) with expertise and concern.”

Others mentioned, among other things, the Spokane Marketplace and scoping businesswomen out walking.

Service: A reader in Tekoa called to report something astonishing. She was in Mandell’s Jewelers in University City and the man helping her actually paid more attention to her than to people calling on the phone.

INW souvenir: Carol Roberts of Libby, Mont., had visitors from Atlanta. And what did they take home with them? “My tiny little Libby phone book,” said Roberts. “They thought it was cute.”

The way life would be if the people who make M&Ms had their way: Guy ordering dinner: “I’ll have the steak.”

Waiter: “Plain or peanut?” - from a “Mister Boffo” comic strip collection, by Joe Martin

Fran Waddell wonders: “Why do drivers with stick shifts always wait until after the light changes green to shift gears?”

Warm-up question: Is there someone in your office building who has become your elevator buddy despite working in a different department or for another business?

Coming soon: Readers and skunks.

Today’s Slice question (prompted by a report from Bob in the Spokane Valley, who swears he has observed this): In traffic, have you ever seen another driver put on pantyhose?
