In a surprise decision, Athens was chosen to host the 1997 World Championships in track and field.

The 23-member Council of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, on the first day of a three-day meeting, picked the Greek capital over Madrid, Spain; Helsinki, Finland; New Delhi, India; and Stanford, Calif.
