Bruin Plays Twice As Well
UCLA’s Keri Phebus won the singles title and teamed with Susie Starrett to win the doubles at the NCAA Division I women’s tennis championships in Malibu, Calif.
The second-seeded Phebus beat topseeded Kelly Pace of Texas 6-2, 6-3 in the singles final and then teamed with Starrett for a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pace and Cristina Moore as the No. 1 seed again beat the No. 2.
Top-seeded Sargis Sargsian of Arizona State dropped the first set, then rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Brett Hansen of Southern California to win the NCAA men’s singles championship in Athens, Ga. Mississippi’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Ali Hamadeh won the doubles 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 over Chad Clark and Trey Phillips of Texas.
