Greek Sites Closed After Guards Strike

Compiled From Wire Services

Visitors were turned away from the Acropolis and other major archaeological sites in Greece on Thursday after Culture Ministry guards began a 48-hour strike.

Between 5,000 and 10,000 people visit the Acropolis daily during the summer to see the white marble temple of the Parthenon, which dates from the 5th century B.C.

The 2,500-member union of museum and archaeological site guards staged a similar strike in October. That walkout ended three weeks later when the government promised to meet their demands.

The guards say the government has not carried out all its promises.
