Furyk’s Birdie Seals Win

Compiled From Wire Services

Jim Furyk followed a near disastrous unplayable lie on the 16th hole with a tap-in birdie on 18 and won the Kapalua International in Kapalua, Hawaii, by two strokes over Russ Cochran, Barry Lane and Jim McGovern.

Furyk was cruising along without a bogey in the final round of the 72-hole tournament at the Kapalua Resorts’ Plantation Course when he sliced his tee shot on the 365-yard 16th into an area of heavy growth.

With three choices as to where to play the shot after the penalty stroke, he opted to hit from the 17th fairway and got within 3-1/2 feet and made bogey.

It narrowed the gap to one stroke over his challengers, but he capped the tournament with a 6-inch birdie putt to finish the round with a 3-under-par 70 and a 19-under 271 total.

Former Pullman resident, Kirk Triplett, finished tied for fifth after a final round 68 for a total of 276.

In Braselton, Ga., New Zealander Frank Nobilo birdied four of five holes on the back nine to win the Sarazen World Open by a stroke.

Nobilo shot a 4-under-par 68, 8-under 216 for the tournament, to outlast the likes of John Daly, Fuzzy Zoeller and Mark Calcavecchia.

Raymond Floyd made a 6-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to beat Tom Wargo and win the rain-shortened, inaugural Emerald Coast Classic in Milton, Fla., on the Senior PGA Tour.

In regulation, Floyd shot a 5-under-par 66 capped by a birdie on the 18th that forced the playoff by tying Wargo at 7-under 135 for 36 holes. Friday’s opening round was rained out.
