Medical Centers Put Spotlight On Diabetes
In honor of November being National Diabetes month, two Spokane medical centers are offering courses in understanding and treating the disease, rated as the fourth-leading cause of death by disease in America.
“Breakthroughs in Diabetes,” part of the Rockwood Clinic’s HealthTalks series, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the clinic.
Dr. Carol Wysham, an endocrinologist, will discuss the latest developments in diabetes treatment and how diabetics can reduce their risk of complications.

A public forum on diabetes will be at noon, Tuesday, at the Deaconess Health and Education Center, 910 W. Fifth.
A panel of three experts will stress the importance of diabetes management.

Self-defense course
There will be a free, self-defense workshop for physically challenged people from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, at the YWCA, 829 W. Broadway.
The course, sponsored by St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, will include awareness training, personal safety tips, counter techniques, pointers for fighting from a disadvantaged position, attacker/victim demonstrations and technique practicing.
Matt David, owner of Spokane Karate Center and holder of a sixth-degree black belt, will lead the workshop.

Impotence seminar
Dr. Ronald Ferris will give a free seminar discussing impotence at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, at at the Deaconess Health and Education Center, 910 W. Fifth.
Ferris, board-certified in family practice and sexology, will discuss impotence treatment options.
The seminar, occurring in the midst of National Diabetes Month, is aptly timed since half the male diabetics over the age of 50 experience impotence.
