Date Set For Killer To Change Sentence
District Judge Ted Wood has called a hearing for Nov. 27 on a bid by convicted killer Michael Copenhaver to change a murder sentence that requires him to spend at least 25 years in prison.
But Wood ruled on Monday that the Nov. 27 hearing will involve only lawyers. He denied a request that Copenhaver and another prison inmate be allowed to testify.
“I don’t want to go through a resentencing,” Wood said.
He sentenced Copenhaver, 19, to life in prison, with a minimum of 25 years, for murdering his stepfather, Peter John Maheras, in March of 1994.
