California Prep Rushes For Record 619 Yards

Ventura County Star

Jean Cobbs has a difficult time standing for long periods of time. Her grandson, Ronney Jenkins, has a difficult time standing in place very long.

Cobbs, 61, is in constant pain. Jenkins, 18, couldn’t stop thinking of his grandmother Thursday night when he was playing football against Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard.

The Hueneme High senior broke the national single-game high school rushing record with 619 yards on 30 carries against the Spartans. Jenkins scored seven touchdowns in the 52-34 season-ending victory.

Shortly before the game, just before he left the family’s modest home blocks away from his school, Jenkins promised Cobbs his final high school game would be special.

This one was going to be for her. All she had to do was make sure she made the trip over to Rio Mesa.

“I did it for my grandmother,” an exhausted, still dazed Jenkins said Friday morning.
