Young Won’t Start Vs. Dallas

From Wire Reports

The NFL’s most ballyhooed game of the season became a no-showdown Friday when Michael Dillingham, San Francisco 49ers team physician, told associates quarterback Steve Young would not start Sunday against the Cowboys.

Young, who has sat out three games because of severe bruises and strains in his left shoulder, did not throw for a second consecutive day Friday.

Young is reportedly worried not only about the pain, but about potential other injuries if he compensates for the problem.

He will be the third quarterback Sunday, behind Elvis Grbac and Cary Conklin.

Several Seahawks ailing

Seattle defensive end Brent Williams couldn’t practice Friday because of knee tendinitis. Backup linebacker Jason Kyle, a key member of the special teams, was out because of a sprained ankle suffered late in the workout Thursday. And fullback Steve Smith sat in the training room because of back spasms.

Those names were added to a list of injured Seahawks, now at 10, for the game Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Williams, Kyle and Smith are questionable because coach Dennis Erickson won’t know until Sunday whether they will be able to play.

Most affected will be the special teams units, filling the roles of Smith and Kyle. Erickson is considering adding rookie Joey Galloway to the kickoff return team to work with Corey Harris and Lamar Smith.

Quarterback John Friesz took snaps with the offense and Erickson said Friesz’ separated left shoulder didn’t bother him too much. Friesz will be Rick Mirer’s backup Sunday.

Nashville Oilers move closer

Nashville officials and the Houston Oilers are working out some final details, and should be ready early next week to say for certain that the NFL plans to play in the Music City in 1998.

“We hope that we’ll be able to sign on Monday and certainly before the Metro Council filing deadline on Tuesday,” Nashville negotiator By- ron Trauger said.

The $292 million agreement, which includes milestones that extend to March 22, 1996, must be wrapped up before stadium construction can begin. The council vote is scheduled for Nov. 21.

The council passed an abbreviated version of the agreement last month.

Holmgren not saying

After a week of closed practices, Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren wouldn’t say Friday whether quarterback Brett Favre or defensive end Reggie White would play against Chicago on Sunday.

Holmgren said Favre ran a handful of plays, testing his left ankle for the first time since he severely sprained it last week at Minnesota.

White, who sprained his right knee against the Vikings, also did some limited work during drills.

Far-from-super prices

Top ticket price for this season’s Super Bowl, to be played in Tempe, Ariz., on Jan. 28, has been raised $50 to $350. This is the first year of three-tier pricing. For the last two Super Bowls, there have been two prices, $300 and $200.
