UW Creams Abdul-Jabbar En Route To 38-14 Victory
Karim Abdul-Jabbar was knocked out early Saturday, and UCLA never recovered.
Rashaan Shehee ran for three touchdowns and No. 22 Washington scored four times following turnovers for a 38-14 victory that qualified the Huskies for a bowl bid.
Abdul-Jabbar, who had rushed for more than 200 yards in three straight games - two short of the NCAA record - sprained his right ankle while being held to no gain on the Bruins’ first play from scrimmage and never returned.
The Bruins punted three plays later, and Washington moved 69 yards on seven plays for what turned out to be the first of two touchdowns in a span of less than 4 minutes.
The Huskies (6-3-1, 5-1-1 Pac-10) were in command the rest of the way in preventing UCLA coach Terry Donahue from winning his 98th conference game, which would have broken the record for league victories he shares with former Washington coach Don James.
Pac-10 sanctions prevented the Huskies from competing in a bowl following the last two seasons.
The loss was the second straight for UCLA (6-4, 3-4), but it’s possible the Bruins will play in a bowl game if they beat No. 12 Southern California next weekend.
Damon Huard, who was 22 of 30 for 259 yards without being intercepted, completed all five of his passes for 68 yards on Washington’s first touchdown drive. He capped the march by throwing a 6-yard scoring pass to Fred Coleman.
On UCLA’s next possession, James Milliner, filling in for AbdulJabbar, juggled a pass from Cade McNown, and the ball bounced into the hands of Washington’s Ink Aleaga for an interception.
That set up a 30-yard, five-play drive, which Shehee capped with a 9-yard touchdown run to made it 14-0.
Shehee finished with 72 yards on 20 carries.
UCLA got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when Milliner scored on a 3-yard run, capping a 55-yard, nine-play drive.
But the Huskies made it 28-7 before the end of the half by scoring two more touchdowns following interceptions.
Richard Thomas scored on a 1-yard run two plays after Ikaika Malloe wrestled the ball away from Eric Scott for an interception at UCLA’s 3-yard line.
McNown was throwing from the end zone on first down after a punt by Geoff Prince and was downed at the 2.
Then, Shehee scored on a 1-yard run with 19 seconds left in the half to cap a 61-yard, 11-play drive after an interception by Reggie Reser.
UCLA’s sloppy play continued following the second-half kickoff when a pitchout by McNown went awry and was recovered by Jerry Jensen at the 15. Shehee scored on a 3-yard run four plays later, his final carry of the game.
John Wales kicked a 27-yard field goal on Washington’s next possession to make it 38-7.
Ryan Fien then replaced McNown, who was 7-for-19 for 61 yards with three interceptions.
Kevin Jordan caught a 19-yard pass from Fien on the final play of the third quarter to become UCLA’s career leader in receiving yardage. J.J. Stokes held the record with 2,469 receiving yards. Jordan finished the game with 2,494.
Fien threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Brian Richards with 11:33 remaining.
A crowd of 50,104 at the Rose Bowl watched UCLA’s final home game of the season.
