Ccs Men Defeat Clark In 2nd Ot

Ryan Vanwey scored in the second overtime period to lift the Spokane Community College men’s soccer team past Clark Community College 2-1 in a quarterfinal match of the NWAACC playoffs at Spokane. Vanwey’s unassisted goal came at the 108-minute mark.

After a scoreless first half, CCS took the lead at the 57-minute mark when Jeremy Stuart scored on a Clayton Thomas assisted play. Three minutes later, Clark knotted the game at 1-1 when Chris Atkins scored on a Shawn Beck assist.

CCS will play Pierce at Bothell in the semifinals on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Kristin Erickson led Washington State with 23 points and eight rebounds as the Cougars defeated the Portland Saints 72-61 in an exhibition game at Bohler Gym.

Amy Saneholtz added 19 points and five rebounds for the winners.

Rebecca Moore scored 16 points and teammates Sherri Northington and Andrea Sherer added 13 and 10, respectively, in Whitworth’s 59-52 exhibition win over Mount Royal at Whitworth.

The Pirates led at the half 30-21 and converted 23 of 75 shots (31 percent) in the game.

Women’s crew

The Washington State women’s Varsity Eight crew team finished third behind Washington and Victoria Rowing Club in the Women’s Open Eight race at the Head of the Lake Regatta on Lake Washington.

Washington rowed a 17.48 to win the 3-1/2-mile Open Eight competition, followed by the Victoria Rowing Club’s time of 18 minutes, 19 seconds. The Cougar Varsity Eight women also rowed a time of 18.19, but finished third.

In the Women’s Open Four race, WSU’s boat had the winning time but was disqualified for not properly completing the course.

Playfair

Jockey Robert Munoz capped a riding triple by steering Sassy Wake to an easy victory in the $4,000 Vunderbar Purse, a 1-mile test honoring one of the top mares in track history. In the process, Sassy Wake became a top candidate for the upcoming Lilac Lady Handicap.

Munoz allowed Sassy Wake to take the lead after the first six furlongs and they crossed the wire with a five-length advantage over former stakes mare On Board.
