Attorney General Shuts Down Scam
People who got notice in the mail that they’d won a sport fishing boat and outboard motor had a few surprises coming.
At the bottom of the promotion from Ewing Fairchild International, Inc., a Florida marketing firm, the lucky “winners” were notified they had to pay a $99.50 shipping, handling and promotional fee.
What they got if they sent money was a small rubber dingy. The “outboard motor” was a small, battery-powered motor - and they didn’t even get a battery.
For victims of the scam, Attorney General Alan Lance had good news Thursday. His Consumer Protection Unit has obtained a judgment against Ewing Fairchild in which the company is ordered to make full restitution, stop its illegal practices and pay $17,500 in civil penalties and fees.
