Franco’s Fans, Foes Hold Opposing Rallies
Chanting anti-democracy slogans and brandishing the fascist salute, 6,000 admirers of Gen. Francisco Franco flocked to the city’s only monument to the dictator Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of his death.
Elsewhere in Madrid, 3,000 people marched to protest the “intolerance and racism” they say characterized Franco’s 36-year regime.
Police guarded both gatherings, which by midday remained free of the violence that has marked the annual rallies on the Sunday nearest the Nov. 20 anniversary of Franco’s death in 1975.
