Fredrick Leads Cougars’ Pac-10 Haul

Washington State’s 11th-ranked Cougars made a strong showing when the Pacific-10 Conference passed out awards.

The Cougars’ Cindy Fredrick was named the conference coach of the year by her peers Monday and two of her players were first-team selections.

Outside hitter Sarah Silvernail, a 6-foot1 junior, was a first-team all-conference pick for the second straight year. Redshirt sophomore setter Stephanie Papke received honorable mention.

Jennifer Stinson, a 6-1 outside hitter from Davenport, was named to the all-freshman team. Jennifer Canevari, an outside hitter, was honorable mention.

Another Cougar, sophomore outside hitter Shannon Wyckoff, was named to the GTE/Sports Information Directors Academic All-American District VIII team. She has a 3.40 grade-point average.

“What a pleasant and shocking surprise,” Fredrick said of her award. “What a great reward for our kids to be recognized like this by our conference.”

North Central graduate Wendy Wilson concluded her collegiate career at Gonzaga by being named to the All-West Coast Conference second team, one of four Bulldogs honored by league coaches.

Twins Jennifer and Christy Kubista received honorable mention and setter Nicole Lamoure was named to the WCC all-freshman team.

Basketball

Gonzaga signed two to men’s letters-of-intent during the early signing period.

Jeremy Eaton, a 6-11, 210-pound center/ forward from Walla Walla Community College, and Richie Frahm, a 6-5, 185-pound guard from Battle Ground in Vancouver, Wash., will arrive next fall.

Eaton, out of Richland High, averaged 18.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 last season as a freshman at Walla Walla CC. Frahm has led Battle Ground in scoring each of the past two seasons, averaging 17.0 points last season.

Chelsea Clark, a 6-1 forward from Mead High and 5-11 forward Kristin Deal from Kent-Meridian in Kent, Wash., have signed with the GU women.

Clark, instrumental in leading the Panthers to third- and fifth-place State AAA finishes the last two years, averaged 8.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks last season. Deal, who has 10 letters at KentMeridian, averaged 12.0 points and 11.0 rebounds last spring during the school’s march to the State AAA title.

Football

Idaho defensive end Barry Mitchell, who had three sacks and eight tackles in Saturday’s 33-13 win over Boise State, is the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week.

Montana quarterback Dave Dickenson secured his fifth offensive award of the season by tossing four touchdown passes in a 42-33 win over Montana State and Idaho State’s James Ferrell, who had a 41.8 average on eight punts in a 35-25 win over Weber State, was special teams pick.

Idaho climbed from No. 25 to No. 17 in The Sports Network Division I-AA poll. Boise fell from 16 to 21. Montana moved up a spot to No. 8. Idle Northern Arizona jumped a spot to No. 22.
