Lawyers Are Used To Discussing Their Briefs
Sorry, romantic rumor mongers: Marcia Clark and Christopher Darden are not an item.
“For the record,” reports about the O.J. Simpson prosecutors’ relationship are untrue, Darden told those in a New York City lecture audience on Sunday (one of whom shouted her own marriage proposal from the wings).
Questions ranged from his underwear style (“Come and find out after the show”) to his shoe size (“9-1/2, which is big enough”).
Darden declined to discuss details of the trial, citing legal restrictions and his book deal.
But he joked about his strategic errors - “If you Easterners knew the gloves wouldn’t fit, why didn’t you tell me?” - and alluded to a telephone call Nicole Brown Simpson made to a shelter for battered women a few days before her murder, which he said may become public through civil lawsuits.
Loose talk
David Letterman, on two Chinese women breaking a Guiness world record by spending 12 days in a room with 888 snakes: “The old record, as I understand it, was held by Marcia Clark, who spent a year in a room with O.J. Simpson’s defense team.”
Make sure you get to the party at the right time
Dr. John turns 54 today.
If you can’t conduct, then you must instruct
Simpson defense attorney Johnnie Cochran’s ex-wife, teacher Barbara Cochran Berry, held little back while discussing her book, “Life After Johnnie Cochran: Why I Left the Sweetest-Talking, Most Successful Black Lawyer in L.A.,” with a Newport Beach, Calif., literary club. “The verbal abuse was awful,” she said. “His favorite put-down was, ‘Those that can’t do, teach.’ That was very hurtful.”
It isn’t pretty what a town without pity can do
Then there’s felonious figure skater Tonya Harding, who trashed her home town of Portland on “Inside Edition” Monday. “Portland people have been the worst to me out of any place in this whole, entire world,” said Harding, who was booed and pelted with empty plastic bottles during a September performance with her band. “It’s sad for me because now I don’t care what Portland thinks.”
Actually, he’s looking more and more Lumpy
Leave it to Beaver to strike a more positive note. Jerry Mathers was a special guest at the weekend’s “Big Beaver Bash” in Troy, Mich., marking the end of a seven-month, $13 million upgrade of Big Beaver Road in the Detroit suburb. Said Mathers: “I never get tired of this kind of thing. It’s not like it’s hard work. I just have to be myself.”
Right, Keith, and he wishes you were there
Whatever anyone else thinks of that new Beatles tune from beyond the grave, “Free as a Bird,” we’re with Rolling Stone Keith Richards: “They’ve got some tracks with John (Lennon)? Hey, that’s what recording is all about. I mean, John would prefer to be alive, I’m sure. Although who knows? I’ve never got a postcard from him since. Maybe he’s having a great time.”
