United Methodist Hosting Advent Dinner

Thanksgiving is a pretty recent memory, and the turkey leftovers will probably still be around for days.

But face it - belts were made to be loosened. In no time at all, folks will once again be ready for a big, holiday food frenzy.

On Wednesday, Spokane Valley United Methodist Church will host an all-church Advent dinner at 6 p.m. The church is at 10422 E. Main, just behind the International House of Pancakes on Sprague.

Everyone is invited. It’s a way to let people in the Valley know they’re welcome at the church. “We want to attract people who maybe don’t know that we’re here,” said church spokesman Dave Johnson.

The Advent dinner will feature a baked potato bar, Christmas cookies and desserts and coffee or juice. The cost is $3 for adults, $1.50 for children 12 and older and free for younger children.

A sanctuary decoration celebration follows at 7 p.m. “That’s how we’re kicking off Advent and Christmas next week,” Johnson said. “We’re putting up all our wreaths, swags, and decorating the Christmas tree. We’ll also have hot apple cider and stuff like that.”

For more information, call the church at 924-7262.

Thanksgiving worship service

The congregations of six Valley churches met Wednesday to celebrate Thanksgiving together at Spokane Valley Baptist Church.

It was a way to put away denominational differences and focus instead on the commonalities of their faith, said the Rev. Joe Farrow, associate pastor of Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene. Members of his congregation joined those of Spokane Valley Baptist, Opportunity Presbyterian, Spokane Valley United Methodist, Holy Trinity Lutheran and Opportunity Christian churches.

The event is sponsored annually by the Valley Ministerial Alliance. But the event got everyone, not just clergy, involved.

“There’s a lot of congregation participation,” Farrow said. The service featured a combined choir representing all the churches, and each also cancelled their individual Wednesday services.

An offering was taken for the Spokane Valley Center, and a communion service concluded the event.

“It’s good,” Farrow said. “Everyone who stays in town appreciates this opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving together in faith.”

St. Paschal’s bazaar

The St. Paschal’s Catholic Church, 2521 N. Park Road, concludes its “Country Christmas” holiday bazaar today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The craft fair is a benefit for the church’s altar society.

The event will feature baked goods, ceramics, plants, crafts, dolls, jams and jellies, afghans and other hand-sewn items.

The food bar will include sandwiches, chili and pies.

Admission is free.
