Byu Trips Boise State With Strong Second Half

In Provo, Utah, Jeff Campbell scored seven of his 10 points during a pivotal second-half run to pace Brigham Young to an 86-71 non-conference victory over Boise State Saturday.

Boise State (0-1) was paced by the 15 points of J.D. Huleen. Mike Tolman added 14. Joe Wyatt finished with 13 points.

BSU of the Big Sky Conference led 64-63 after Shane Flanaghan’s basket with 10:05 left in the game.

BYU (1-0) of the Western Athletic Conference went ahead for good on Kenneth Roberts’ layup with 9:09 to go. Campbell’s flurry came during a 23-7 BYU run.

Boise State used a 10-for-13 bar rage from 3-point range to build a 43-42 halftime lead. But the Broncos hit just 1 of 8 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Mont St. 99, Minn.-Morris 64

In Bozeman, Mont., Quadre Lollis had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Bobcats dominated Minnesota-Morris.

MSU, of the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference, had five players in double figures in rolling over the NCAA Division II Cougars.

S. Florida 65, Pepperdine 58

In Tampa, Chucky Atkins scored 18 points and had eight assists as South Florida overcame poor shooting to open its season with a victory over the Waves.

The Bulls outscored Pepperdine 23-4 from the foul line and made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 43 seconds to hold on.

Gerald Brown’s 18 points led Pepperdine.

St. Mary’s 84, Bucknell 66

A.J. Rollins scored 24 points and point guard David Sivulich added 22 to lead St. Mary’s over visiting Bucknell.

The Bison had their first lead, 43-40, in the second half, but Sivulich, starting in place of Kamran Sufi to open the second half, hit two 3-point shots as the Gaels went on a 27-7 run to open an insurmountable 14-point lead.

Portland 69, UAB 60

In Portland, Lemont Daniels scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half as Portland built an early lead and held on to beat Alabama-Birmingham in the season opener for both teams.

Carlos Williams led Alabama-Birmingham with 20 points.
