College Bowl Winners Recently Announced
Several Inland Northwest high schools and students were named winners in the College Bowl, sponsored by Washington State University’s Math Day V School Competition.
There were 32 teams in two categories based on student enrollment.
Category A: Lakeside High School, Nine Mile Falls, earned first place. Team members were Mike Witt, Jim Gilles, and Joe Tenny. The teacher is Barbara Anderson.
Liberty High School, Spangle, earned third place. Team members were Aaron Carroll, John MacKay and Jason Kittredge. The teacher is Rod Fletcher.
Category B: Lewis and Clark High School earned first place. Team members were Jude Battista, Beth Pierce and Robert Dirks. The teacher is Gregg Sampson.
More than 375 students participated in the written, 85-minute Probe exam during the day. Inland Northwest winners:
First place was earned by Ilyas Nuri, a Pullman High School senior. He will receive a $700 scholarship to attend WSU. Third place was earned by Robert Dirks of Lewis and Clark High School. He will receive a $300 scholarship from WSU.
The top three scores from each school made up the Probe Team score. Winning teams were:

Category B: Pullman High School third place. Team members were Ilyas Nuri, Karl Kahn and Parag Upadhyaya. The teacher is Boo Drury.
Richard O’Neill, Donald Herak and Patrick West, all of Spokane, were re-elected to Gonzaga University’s Board of Trustees for a four-year term.
This is O’Neill’s third term, and Herak and West’s fourth term. The board of trustees is GU’s decisionmaking body.
Shirley Hackett, a Spokane artist, won first place for her oil, “Salmon River Bend,” in the recent Salmon River Art Guild’s Regional Fall Art Show in Riggins, Idaho.
Hackett also received second place for “Poplars in June” and a Merit Award for “Autumn Dress.”
Sandra Carmichael, Spokane, received a Merit Award for her oil, “Waiting for Dinner.”
Mark Haas, a Washington State Trooper was presented the “Trooper of the Year” award by the Spokane Valley Lions Club for his outstanding dedication and effort to make the Spokane Valley a safer community.
Robert Owen, Scott Hardin and Philip Brantner, each have been awarded a $500 Schroeder Student Loan Award from Washington State University.
Owen, a 1994 graduate of Newport (Wash.) High School and a sophomore majoring in business, is the son of Katherine and Robert Owen, Newport. He is a President’s Honor Roll member and the football manager.
Hardin, a 1992 graduate of Davenport (Wash.) High School, is a senior majoring in business administration and decision sciences. He is a member of the Mortar Board and Golden Key National Honor societies and the WSU Homecoming Committee. He is the son of Georgia and Michael Hardin, Davenport.
Brantner, a 1993 graduate of Garfield-Palouse High School, received a $500 Schroeder Student Loan Award. He is a junior majoring in business administration, and the son of Beverly and Dale Brantner, Palouse, Wash.
