Terrapins Survive Late Scare To Beat Tigers

Johnny Rhodes scored 12 of his 22 points in the final 9 minutes as No. 19 Maryland received a huge scare from unheralded Towson State before rallying for a 70-67 men’s basketball victory Monday night in Baltimore.

The Terrapins (1-1) trailed by six points at halftime, 49-40 early in the second half and 55-47 with 8:45 remaining before storming back to beat their in-state rivals for the 11th time without a loss.

But the game wasn’t decided until Towson State (0-1) guard Ralph Blalock’s 3-point attempt fell short at the buzzer.

(13) Missouri 89, Tennessee St. 75

Kelly Thames scored 16 points and Kendrick Moore came off the bench to score 15 as Missouri (2-0) beat Tennessee State (0-1) in Columbia, Mo.

The winning Tigers trailed 19-11 midway through the first half but used a 19-4 run to go up 30-23. The streak, which started at the 13:43 mark of the first half, included 13 points from reserves Derek Grimm and Jason Sutherland.

The Cavaliers (2-0) shook off another slow start thanks to a big lift from 7-foot-4 Chase Metheney and rolled to a win over the Tribe (0-2) in Charlottesville, Va.

Metheney, who sat out last season with back trouble, finished with six points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots in 18 minutes. While he was on the floor, Virginia outscored the Tribe 50-23.

(20) Georgia Tech 87, Campbell 76

Freshman Stephon Marbury scored 26 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (4-1) past the Camels (0-2) in Atlanta.

Drew Barry added 20 points for Georgia Tech, while Matt Harping added 19.

(24) Michigan 84, St. Francis, Pa. 52

Travis Conlan scored all of his career-high 12 points on 3-pointers as the Wolverines (3-2) ended a two-game losing streak with a win over the Red Flash (0-2) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Michigan forward Maceo Baston matched his career-best with 15 points.
