UI Students Win Honors In Vocal Competition

Three area vocal students at the University of Idaho recently received prizes from the regional competition of the Inland Empire Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

The students and their hometowns are:

Jennifer Hudson, a soprano from Moscow, placed first in Division I B Section 3. She is the daughter of Cheryl Hudson.

Erin Walker, also from Moscow, soprano, placed first in Division V. She is the daughter of Diane Walker.

Leif Egertson, a tenor from Davenport, Wash., placed first in Division IV. He is the son of Sharon Egertson.

Out of the 20 UI students participating, nine won prizes. They were among 110 singers from universities and private studios in Washington and North Idaho.

Cassandra Neal, a molecular biology and biochemistry major from St. Maries, won the right to present the results of her research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research last spring.

Her research centered on SCA1, a gene subject to the same mutation that causes fragile X retardation syndrome and Huntington disease. Neal was an undergraduate researcher for Holly Wichman, a University of Idaho associate professor of zoology, and has since accepted a job at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

Bob Nonini, president of the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club, recently presented a $10,000 check to the Coeur d’Alene Public Library Foundation Inc. during an open house held at the library. The donation was the result of the Rotary’s annual rose sale.

Lori Frank, Coeur d’Alene, has received the 1995 Idaho Forest Products Outstanding Teacher Award. Frank, who teaches forestry, wildlife and biology at Coeur d’Alene High School, will receive a $450 grant for the school and a plaque.

Diane Riley, a first-grade teacher at Athol Elementary School, has received an honorary mention and will receive a certificate and a $100 grant for her school.

The award recognizes teachers using exemplary approaches to teach about forest-related topics. Teachers throughout Idaho were nominated by their peers, principals, superintendents, parents and others to receive the awards.
