Cougars Suffer First Volleyball Loss

Kristin Folkl had 16 digs and 17 kills as Stanford rallied to defeat Washington State University 8-15, 15-8, 12-15, 15-4, 15-7 in a battle for first place in the Pac-10 Conference Friday night in Pullman.

Cary Wendell had 43 assists for the fourth-ranked Cardinal, who moved their record to 7-0 in the Pac-10 and 11-2 overall.

Sarah Silvernail had 21 kills for the seventh-ranked Cougars (5-1, 13-1), while teammate Stephanie Papke had 62 assists.

The match was played before a school-record 4,039 fans, the first volleyball sellout in the history of WSU.

At Spokane Falls, Cheryl Hovde recorded four kills and 25 assists to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane (15-11) past Northwest College 15-8, 15-0, 15-5 in a non-conference matchup.

Laurie Peters had seven kills for the Sasquatch.

At Santa Clara, Cari Wehner tallied 10 digs and 37 assists to lift Santa Clara (2-1 West Coast Conference, 5-12) past Gonzaga (0-3, 2-11).

Wendy Wilson had 13 kills for the Bulldogs, while teammate Nicole Lamoure had 39 assists.

Gonzaga will play another conference game tonight at St. Mary’s.

Women’s soccer

Visiting Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (7-1-1) edged Gonzaga University (1-10-0) 2-1 at Martin Field in a non-conference game.

Cal Poly-SLO scored the first two goals. Michelle Nuesca got a cross from Megan Lehtonen and put a shot into the left side of the net at 33:00. Shawna Stickle gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead at 35:00.

Brenda Putt scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal (1-10-0) at 37:00.

The match was the only action of the week for the Bulldogs, who will play at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah next weekend.

Golf

Mark Rohde qualified for the PGA Club Pro Championship which began Thursday in Palm Springs, Calif. Rohde was the only Eastern Washington golfer to qualify last month at the Pacific Northwest sectionals.
