Students Semifinalists In Scholarship Program

The following Inland Northwest students were named semifinalists in the 41st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They competed against 6,900 students nationwide and scholarships totaling $26 million.

The students, their schools and hometowns are:

Ian Bangs and Nicholas Brandt, Riverside High School, Chattaroy.

Jo Pierce, Cheney High School, Cheney.

Frank Schwieterman, Deer Park High School, Deer Park.

Terrah Goeden, Ephrata High School, Ephrata, Wash.

Patrick Kohl, Medical Lake High School, Medical Lake.

VaLynn Grant, Moses Lake High School, Moses Lake.

Katherine Vandermark, Othello High School, Othello, Wash.

Derek Lyons and Howell Moffett, Pullman High School, Pullman.

Jonathan Larsen, Upper Columbia Academy, Spangle.

The following Inland Northwest students have earned their master’s degree at Central Washington University, Ellensburg. Listed are the students, their master degrees and hometowns:

Tonya Petler, mathematics, Othello, Wash.; Lorri Nielson, master teacher, Colfax, Wash.; Linda Gleason and Susan Hohman reading specialists, and Cindy Cole, special education, all Moses Lake.

Andrew Ueckert, music education, Spokane; and Vern Millican, physical education, health and leisure studies, Moses Lake.

The following Inland Northwest students have won scholarships and awards for the 1995/96 academic year from Western Washington University, Bellingham:

Carrie Field, daughter of Steve and Debi Schiffelbein and a 1995 graduate of Shadle Park High School, $1,000 President’s Scholarship.

Matthew Bell, son of Michael and Stephanie Bell, Spokane, $1,000 Knapman Chemistry Scholarship. He is a senior majoring in biochemistry and exercise science.

Megan McChesney, Spokane, was awarded her second installment of the Western Foundation National Merit Scholarship. She is a sophomore.

Daniel Hauge, Spokane, has received his fourth installment of the Western Foundation National Merit Scholarship. He is a senior majoring in humanities and carries a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

Steven Stehr, assistant professor of political science at Washington State University, has been appointed interim director of the Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service at WSU. A permanent director is expected to be named in two years. The institute’s mission is to foster civic education, public service and public policy research in a nonpartisan, cross-disciplinary setting. Stehr joined the WSU faculty in 1994.

Richard Cofer, Spokane, recently graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, with a doctor of philosophy degree.
