Seventh-Ranked Cougars Rebound
A night after its first loss of the year, seventh-ranked Washington State (6-1, 14-1) rode the 17 kills and five blocks of Sarah Silvernail Saturday to a 15-6, 15-6, 15-4 scorching of visiting California in a Pac-10 Conference volleyball match at Pullman.
Elis Arias added 17 digs and eight kills, and Stephanie Papke 37 assists for the Cougars, who lost to fourth-ranked Stanford in five games on Friday. Louella Lovely led the Bears (3-5, 7-7) with 18 assists and six digs.
Annette Hill had 12 kills and Lisa Holley 12 digs as Weber State (3-3, 12-5) beat visiting Eastern Washington 15-4, 15-11, 15-6 in a Big Sky Conference match at Ogden, Utah. Juli Carlson had nine kills and Jaime Dotson 21 assists for the Eagles (0-5, 3-13).
Tzvetelina Yanchulova had all 20 of her kills in the final three games as visiting Idaho (4-1, 15-4) defeated Northern Arizona 12-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-8 in a Big Sky match at Flagstaff.
Louisa Kawulok added 10 kills for the Vandals. Kristal Blair had 14 kills for the Lumberjacks (4-2, 8-6).
Kaya Allen’s 11 digs and two aces helped Community Colleges of Spokane (16-11) to a 15-1, 15-9, 15-4 non-conference win over North Idaho College at Spokane Falls. Cheryl Hovde had 22 assists and Stephanie Short nine aces for the Sasquatch.
Cross country
Tara Carlson led the University of Washington to the women’s title at the Sundodger Invitational at Seattle.
Carlson completed the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 7.73 seconds, nearly 2 seconds ahead of Michigan’s Pauline Arnill. Fifth-place Emily Johnson (17:34.98) of University High was second for the Huskies, who scored 29 points.
Cheska Fairbanks, in 41st, was the top runner for ninth-place Gonzaga. EWU was 11th, topped by Dawn Pedersen, in 50th.
Club Northwest won the men’s invitational title. Champion Uli Steidl of Portland finished the 8,000 in 24:44.84. Nick Rogers, in 20th, led seventh-place EWU. GU was 10th.
The men’s open division went to Clay Wing (26:05.72) of Western Washington. Whitworth was 12th, led by Dale Macomber in 44th. Darren Thompson , in 61st, was the top runner for 17th-place CCS. Margaret Butler (18:06.40) of Norwesters Track Club was the women’s open champ. Whitworth took sixth, guided by Libby Lowe in 19th.
Women’s soccer
Jennifer Tissue scored twice and guided Whitworth (4-0-1) to first place in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges with a 2-1 win over visiting Willamette.
The Pirates are 7-4-1 overall, 7-1-1 in their last nine. The match was scoreless through 37 minutes until midfielder Joy Cullen fed Tissue.
Kim Rasmussen scored off Erin Johnson’s indirect kick midway through the second half and Kim McArdle made 24 saves as Shoreline edged CCS 1-0 in an NWAACC match at Seattle.
CCS had nearly three times as many shots on goal but McArdle stopped good late tries by Nicole Hayes and Heather Wolfe.
Men’s soccer
Joe Hansonton scored the first and third goals as Pacific Lutheran beat visiting Whitworth 3-0 in an NCIC match at Tacoma.
Fasil Teka’s goal at 66 minutes lifted Highline (6-2-1 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) to a 2-1 win over CCS (4-3-1) at Spokane Falls. Adam Tajan of CCS fed Doug Birdtail for a goal at 6 minutes.
