This Marriage Ain’t Over Until The Fat Tenor Sings
The press just won’t let opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti be. He wants to talk music, and they want to talk about whether he is having an affair with his secretary, Nicoletta Mantovani.
Pavarotti, before a weekend concert in Rome, held a news conference on Thursday. “Let’s just talk about music,” he pleaded.
But the press asked about the rumors. Pavarotti’s wife, Adua Veroni, has denied reports that a divorce is in the works, but stories have circulated about her trying to snare 80 percent of her husband’s wealth.
Meanwhile, back at the news conference, Pavarotti was asked if he would someday dedicate the Tosti opera piece “Non T’Amo Piu” (“I Don’t Love You Anymore”) to his wife. His answer: “The soap-opera stuff, we’ll leave it for another day.”
Loose talk
Jennifer Beals (“Flashback”) on her comeback role in “Devil In a Blue Dress” (in People magazine): “It’s funny to be back. I’m thinking that maybe if I wear really serious suits this time around instead of torn sweatshirts, people will take me a lot more seriously.”
He’ll celebrate, no doubt, at the Watergate Hotel
E. Howard Hunt turns 77 today.
In the end, to his ownself he could not be true
Nicolas Cage, 31, and Patricia Arquette, 27, are no more a couple. That you may know. But what you may not know is why they got married, six months ago, in the first place. “Ultimately, I married a woman who is my friend and also the person I would want to be if I were a woman,” Cage explained at the time.
He’ll do anything to avoid taking a day job
Don’t expect Ted Koppel to retire from his “Nightline” job anytime soon. “Can I see anything on the horizon that would cause me to leave?” Koppel said to TV Guide. “The answer is no. I’m clearly aging, but I’m not dead yet.”
The only thing that’s smoking now is her records
Don’t try to tell Aretha Franklin about the joys of smoking. The queen of soul claims to be singing better than ever, reaching notes she thought she’d lost in the 1980s. “That’s because I stopped smoking in 1991,” Franklin said. “I started when I was around 14 and stopping has definitely helped my voice.”
So, does that mean ‘Striptease’ will be PG-rated?
The daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, 7-year-old Rumer, beat out eight other kid actors for a role in her mother’s forthcoming movie, “Striptease.” “She asked me about playing the role,” says Moore. “I said it wasn’t for me to say…. I had to prepare her, to say, ‘You might not get it.”’
America sure loves its war heroes
Colin Powell signed more than 2,100 copies of his best-selling autobiography “My American Journey” on Wednesday at Denver’s Tattered Cover Bookstore, breaking the store’s previous book-signing record of 1,375, set in 1992 by Powell’s Gulf War colleague, Norman Schwarzkopf.
