Lake City Soccer Starts Quick Finishes Off Couer D’Alene 4-1
The Lake City soccer team used experience and good conditioning to get out to an early lead and defeat Couer d’Alene 4-1 Wednesday on a rain-soaked field at Hayden Meadows Elementary.
“The weather really hindered both teams ability to play well,” Lake City forward Will Scott said.
The Timberwolves took control early on a goal by Scott and an assist my Mike Thompson with 6 minutes gone in the first half.
They scored for the second time in the first half on a long arching shot by Noah Beck that found the top of the net. Teammate Jamie Landwehr increased the lead to 3-0 on a penalty kick 25 minutes into the first half.
“We were prepared today because we stepped it up in practice for the last week and seemed to improve,” Scott said.
The Vikings Joey Davis scored Couer d’Alene’s only goal on an assist from Ben Davis at the 28-minute mark in the first.
Lake City scored the last goal on a Dan Clark goal assisted by Scott Blodgett.
The Timberwolves lost defensive midfield starter Ethan Dodson for a game when he got two yellow cards.
“Ethan has been a starter for us since last year and we’ll probably rotate two or three different players for him against Sandpoint,” Lake City coach Bill Eisenwinter said.
Lake City goalkeeper Chad Beadell faced nine shots on goal and ended up with five saves.
Beadell was tested in the second half when the Vikings got three shots on goal including a indirect penalty kick, but no shots found the net. Beadell also stopped CdA’s Ben Davis from scoring on a diving save to his left with 10 minutes left in the game.
Coeur d’Alene goalkeeper Dave Scamell also faced nine shots and finished with four saves.
“I thought we did a good job of pushing the ball around today, but in the second half we held the ball too much and the game got real physical,” said Eisenwinter. “Hopefully, we’ll play quicker and not so physical against Sandpoint.”
Lake City will face Sandpoint at 4:30 p.m. today at Hayden Meadows Elementary.
The Vikings season is over until spring when the North Idaho high school season begins.
“We played well today, we’ve got a lot of young players and they (Lake City) had a lot more experienced varsity players,” Ben Davis said.
The winner of the Lake City-Sandpoint game will play in the state tournament in Boise starting Nov. 19.
