Tonie Fitzgerald Recognized For Innovative Programs

Tonie Fitzgerald, horticulture agent for the Washington State University Cooperative Extension, has received the Achievement Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents.

Fitzgerald was selected because of her innovative and successful programs for master gardeners, commercial horticulture producers, homeowners, landscape designers and agency personnel. It’s given to agents with less than 10 years of service.

The following students were awarded scholarships from Washington State University’s College of Education for the current school year:

Jody Swanson, Moses Lake, a senior studying elementary and early childhood education, and English as a second language, received a $500 multicultural scholarship. Swanson is the daughter of Ron and Hope Strnad.

Dianna Mangis, Spangle, a senior studying recreation and leisure studies, received a $500 scholarship. She is the daughter of David and Judith Mangis.

From Spokane: Noah Barfield, a senior studying secondary education, English and Spanish, won a $500 scholarship. He is the son of Coy and Cynthia Barfield. Symia Welch a sophomore studying secondary education, English and Spanish, received a $500 multicultural Scholarship. Her parents are Jesse and Vickie Welch of Gresham, Ore.

Brittany Hopkins, daughter of Tom and Cathy Hopkins, participated last summer in the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, a program of musical study and performance. Hopkins, who has studied soprano for more than four years, is a senior at Ferris High School.

Gregory Yasinitsky, director of jazz studies at Washington State University, received a Special Award for Composition from the American Association of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

This is the 10th consecutive year Yasinitsky has been selected for this award.
