Say It Ain’t So, Bazooka Joe

Associated Press

An American institution is getting a facelift: the Bazooka bubble gum wrapper.

For the first time in its 49-year history, the popular bubble gum will be swathed in a refurbished logo. It will retain the red, white and blue colors, but feature a lightning-shaped yellow border between each color, a giant pink bubble, and hipper lettering for the word “Bazooka.”

The traditional “Bazooka Joe” comic still will be included with the soft pink gum.

“The new repackaging retains the instant familiarity of Bazooka while freshening up the product,” said Arthur T. Shorin, president of The Topps Co. Inc.

The new wrapper was revealed Friday outside the F.A.O. Schwarz toy store in midtown Manhattan, where a 7-foot replica of a piece of Bazooka was displayed above the main escalator.
