Whirlpool Earnings Off

Whirlpool Corp. said Friday its third-quarter profits declined 35 percent from a year ago under pressure from higher materials costs and stiff competition, particularly in Europe.

The world’s largest appliance maker said its net earnings for the July-September period were $64 million, or 85 cents a share, compared with $98 million, or $1.30 a share, in the third quarter of 1994.

The 1994 results included an $18 million gain from sale of Whirlpool’s stake in a vaccuum-cleaner joint venture.
