Girl Suffers Burns Playing With Lighter

From Staff And Wire Reports

A 6-year-old girl was hospitalized Sunday after she set her clothes on fire with a lighter.

The girl, whose name was not released, is the daughter of Margaret Bedard of Twin Lakes, Idaho.

About 4 p.m., the girl was playing with one of her parents’ lighters outside of her Twin Lakes home, said Kootenai County sheriff’s Sgt. Al March.

“Apparently she caught her top on fire,” March said. “She managed to pull the top off and in the process managed to get a little singing of hair on the face.”

The girl also suffered what appeared to be second-degree burns about the size of a fist on her chest, March said.

The girl was taken to Kootenai Medical Center where she appeared to be in good condition, March said.

“She’s awake and conscious and talking with her mom,” he said. “She’s not even crying.”

March urged parents to keep lighters out of the reach of children. He also suggested adults use child-proof lighters.
