Qb Retains Job

Associated Press

UCLA freshman quarterback Cade McNown will start against Stanford on Saturday despite his sub-par performance against Arizona last Saturday, said coach Terry Donahue.

Donahue also said he hopes senior linebacker Donnie Edwards, who hasn’t played since suffering a compression fracture of a vertebra against Oregon on Sept. 16, will start against the No. 23 Cardinal.

It appeared Edwards, a third-team All-America last year, would play against Arizona, but the NCAA suspended him for that game for his alleged involvement with a sports agent.

McNown, who completed just 3 of 18 passes for 80 yards as UCLA managed to beat Arizona 17-10, was relieved by junior Ryan Fien late in the third quarter.
