Man Arrested After Witnesses See Gun

Spokane County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Saturday afternoon after an off-duty deputy saw him point a gun at a car full of people across the street from a Spokane Valley tavern.

The off-duty deputy said the man walked away from a two-tone, brown Lincoln which was parked in a lot in the 4800 block of East Sprague about 3 p.m. He then turned and pointed a handgun at the car’s occupants before tucking the gun behind his back and into the wasteband of his pants, the off-deputy said.

The man then walked across the street to the Phase II Tavern at 4824 E. Sprague, where several witnesses were on the phone with law enforcement dispatchers, said Lt. David Wiyrick, Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Deputies arrested Edward Harrison, 55, inside the tavern’s bathroom without incident. A loaded revolver and long bladed knife were taken from Harrison, Wiyrick said.

Harrison was charged with aiming a weapon at a person, possession of a weapon in a prohibited place and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the three charges, as well as on an outstanding warrant.

Wiyrick praised the callers, who he said made the situation safer for deputies.

Youths arrested for car burglaries

Two teenagers were charged with several counts of vehicle prowling after an early morning spree of car burglaries in the Valley.

A witness followed the three boys to the area of Grace Avenue and Sargent Road at about 1 a.m. Friday, but returned to his home near the corner of Grace and Laura Road after he saw one of them carrying what looked like a club.

Deputies searched the area and saw one of the teens jump a fence along Argonne Road, near South Riverway Road and arrested him west of Argonne.

A second teen was arrested along the river bank by the Millwood Bridge after deputies chased him from some bushes in the 9000 block of South Riverway.

Deputies discovered the boys had property that was missing from the cars, Wiyrick said.

The two teens - ages 13 and 14 - were charged with four counts of second-degree vehicle prowling, one count of attempted second-degree vehicle prowling and one count of third-degree theft.

Man stabbed in the Valley

Deputies are searching for a man they say carried a grudge and a knife when he attacked another man in the Spokane Valley.

Calvin Grendahl and a friend told deputies they were watching television about 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday when the 38-year-old assailant knocked at the door of the trailer at 4706 E. First.

The man asked Grendahl if he remembered him and began to kick and hit him. He then held a knife to Grendahl’s throat and body and threatened to kill him.

Grendahl, 36, was then beaten some more before the man cut him three times in the head with the knife.

After the attack, Grendahl’s friend, who was threatened but not harmed, locked the door to the trailer. While the two waited for deputies to arrive, the man returned, pounded on the door and threatened the men again, before fleeing, Wiyrick said.

Grendahl was taken to the hospital for treatment. His injuries were not life threatening, Wiyrick said.

Deputies know who attacked Grendahl, but have not yet made an arrest. The attacker will face first-degree assault charges when he is captured, Wiyrick said.
