Let The Halloween Fun Begin

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

Spokane Mayor Jack Geraghty proclaims October “Safe Halloween Month” and encourages residents to support a coupon book fund-raiser, sponsored by The Easter Seal Society of Washington in cooperation with local businesses.

The book will provide tamperproof treats for kids during trick-or-treating.

The “Safe Halloween” coupon book is valued at more than $53 and can be purchased for a $1 donation at Spokane-area Rosauers, Albertson’s and Safeway stores.

Proceeds will benefit the Easter Seal Society of Washington, a directservice organization which helps people with disabilities to live more independent lives.

The book’s 17 coupons offers discounts at Wild Walls, Laser Quest, Wonderland Golf and Games and more, as well as free items at stores and restaurants. Coupons can be distributed individually or as a book on Halloween.

“Treat our kids with care this Halloween,” says Geraghty.

Auntie’s Halloween party: Kids of all ages are invited to hop into ghoulish costumes for some free Halloween hilarity on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main. The Second Floor Reading Area is the place for an afternoon of ghost stories, gruesome treats, silly games and a costume contest. For more information, call 838-0206.

Terrific terror: The Old Union Gospel Mission (at Spokane Falls Boulevard and Browne) has been transformed into a House of Terror to provide wholesome horror for teens and adults as well as benefit Toys For Tots, Cat Tales and Special Olympics.

Get spooked by a mad scientist, a graveyard of dancing girls and the performances of professional actors and actresses from the Renaissance Players Guild.

The House of Terror is open nightly from 6 until midnight through Oct. 31, with a special show at 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday night.

Tickets at the door are $5 for adults, $4 for teens (no children under 12 admitted) or discounted to $4 and $3, respectively, if purchased at Spokane-area Zip Trip stores.

Halloween festivities: Marvel’s “mini” Gym, 1320 N. Howard in Spokane, will host a haunted house and party for kids 12 and under from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $7 per child for games, trampoline, costume judging and snacks. For reservations, call 326-3540.

Costume tips: The Sewing Fashion Council of New York offers these tips when creating Halloween costumes:

Wear light-colored clothing or add reflective tape to the costume and trick-or-treat bag so the child will be visible to traffic.

Allow extra room for warm clothes under the costume. Use flame-retardant materials for costumes and be wary of burning candles in jack-o-lanterns.

Read instructions carefully when using over-the-counter makeup kits or face paints. Use a cold cream base under Halloween makeup for easy removal.

Finally, be sure the entire costume is comfortable for walking and safe for an enjoyable Halloween.
