Gsl At A Glance

G-Prep 17, University 16

Key plays The Titans scored with 2:37 to play and went for the two-point conversion, but officials ruled Joe Jeffries’ right foot was on the out-of-bounds line at the back-right corner of the end zone as he hauled in Casey Cornelius’ pass.

Stars of the game

Joe Ascolese sparked a G-Prep running attack that had 193 yards at halftime and 290 for the game as he gained 180 yards. Cornelius completed 15 of 21 passes for 219 yards and linebacker Mike Rosa and lineman Jeff Hollenbach sparked a defense that blanked the Bullpups in the second half.

Notable

Prep ended a three-game losing streak despite 11 penalties for 127 yards. The Bullpups had a second-and-44 from their 29 in the fourth quarter…. Gonzaga Prep went 89 yards in four plays on its first possession and 64 in nine on its second for a 14-0 lead 34 seconds into the second quarter. U-Hi bounced back to make it a game, going 73 yards in 10 plays, capped by a lovely 32-yard scoring pass from Cornelius-to-Jeffries…. U-Hi won the statistical battle, mainly because Prep couldn’t pass. The Bullpups threw two passes and the only completion was an end-around flanker pass from Sean Thacker to Chris Odenthal for 18 yards - on a third-and-16 play from U-Hi’s 43. Thacker also ran a reverse and the Bullpups called two halfback passes, but Ascolese didn’t pull the trigger, running one for a first down after getting called for intentional grounding on the other…. “Obviously, we pulled everything out of the bag in the first half and then held on. We made a couple of big plays,” Prep coach Don Anderson said. “We got a little jump - we knew they were a talented offensive team - and then hung on.”

Next opponent

University closes at home with a 7:30 game Friday against Lewis and Clark. Prep plays Rogers in the lone Thursday game at Albi at 6:30.

Shadle Park 35, LC 16

Key play

LC lined up for a 45-yard field, trailing 14-10, 5 minutes into the third quarter. When Matt Stueckle’s kick came up short, the Tigers started walking off the field. However, the ball died on the 2 and Shawn Kingsbury picked it up, started forward, cut to the sideline opposite the LC bench and raced for a touchdown.

Stars of the game

Kingsbury, who also rushed for 158 yards on 27 tough carries, and the offensive line of center Russ Seaman, guards Sam Glanzer and Ben Monger, tackles Cameron Schultz and Doug Humphries and tight ends Gerritt Wideman and Tom Mohr . The Highlanders basically won the game with an all-running 18-play, 92-yard drive that chewed up 8:42, making the game 28-10 with 8:31 left.

Notable

In what may be a school record, LC only had four running plays for 8 yards in the first half. Paul Mencke threw 16 passes, completing seven, 167 yards. On his first pass, LC’s first play, he hit Mike Lynch, streaking down the left sideline for a 60-yard TD after Lynch bounced off a tackler at the 15. However, he also threw an interception in the end zone. The Tigers then ran the ball on the first eight plays of the second half for 40 yards…. The Highlanders rushed for 269 yards on 51 attempts…. Shadle Park had 60 offensive plays to 43 for LC, 30 of them passes.

Next opponent

Shadle meets Mead in the 5:45 game at Albi and LC goes to U-Hi for a 7:30, both on Friday.
