UI Quarterback Duties Are Still In The Balance

Jim Meehan Staff Writer

Idaho should have the services of two receiving weapons for its next football game, but the status of Arnold Gunn is questionable.

Wide receiver Dwight McKinzie had a team-high five catches against Oregon State on Saturday before injuring his shoulder in the third quarter. UI coach Chris Tormey said he expects McKinzie to be ready for the Vandals’ home opener against Sonoma State on Sept. 16. UI has a bye this week.

Tight end Andy Gilroy, who didn’t play in Saturday’s game due to a sprained ankle, should be able to play against Sonoma State, Tormey said.

But Gunn, who injured his shoulder when he slammed into OSU’s Cam Reynolds while making a tackle on a punt return in the first half, is probably out for a minimum of two weeks. He suffered a pinched nerve.

QB call on hold

Tormey said he was still evaluating the play of quarterbacks Eric Hisaw and Brian Brennan from Saturday’s game. The two split time in the 14-7 loss to OSU.

“I haven’t made a decision,” Tormey said. “Both could have played better and they’ve got the ability to play better, but I don’t think either one could have won with the way the supporting cast played.”

“It’s not a slam-dunk decision,” Tormey added, noting that neither quarterback has established a solid hold on the starting job.

Idaho’s offense had just 153 total yards. UI’s seven points was its lowest output since a 41-7 loss to Washington State in 1989.

“The biggest reason is that Oregon State’s pretty damn good,” Tormey said. “We got into too many predictable passing situations. We’ve got to stay out of third and long.”
