Ferris Edges U-Hi In Opener

Kim Rehwer and Megan Cummings scored second-half goals Wednesday to rally host Ferris to a 2-1 Greater Spokane League girls soccer season-opening win over University.

U-Hi dominated the first half, with nine of its 14 shots on goal coming before intermission. All of the attempts missed the mark.

The Titans finally connected 15 minutes into the second half, as Sara Streufert dribbled down the right side and crossed a pass to Casey Lektorlich.

The lead vanished 5 minutes later, after Mariah McConnaughey’s pass to Rehwer. Angie Schmidt fed Cummings for the game-winner at the 74-minute mark.

In other GSL openers, Jessica Fransen took part in four goals during the first 48 minutes as host Lewis and Clark toppled North Central 5-0 at Hart Field.

Fransen scored three and assisted on Kristin Fabbe’s goal early in the first half.

At Central Valley, Katie Carpenter scored twice and Gina Polignoni set up Holly Hyatt for two goals in a 7-0 win over Rogers. Rogers’ Angie Vulcano had 19 saves.

At Mead Junior High, the nine-time defending league champion Mead Panthers shared the wealth in a 6-0 win over Shadle Park.

Katrina Morton, Allison Beatty, Stacy Clinesmith, Jen Dunford, Kellie Leaf and Kari Andrakin scored for Mead. Leaf had three assists.Gonzaga Prep was idle.

Men’s soccer

Clay Harty scored three goals to lead visiting Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo to a 4-2 non-conference win, spoiling the Gonzaga University debut of coach Einar Thorarinsson.

After Harty’s first score, midway through the first half, the Bulldogs took a brief lead on goals by Jeff McAllister and Joshua Kaiel. McAllister’s score came off a pass from Scott Davis; Kaiel’s goal was a header off a pass from Rusty Arlig. Women’s volleyball

Washington State and Idaho shifted their non-league match to Sept. 30 in Pullman.

The teams had intended to compete Wednesday at Pullman.
