Cougars Hire One Of Their Own As Assistant In Track Program

From Staff And Wire Reports

Debra Lombardi, a 1983 graduate of Washington State, has been hired as an assistant coach for the Cougars’ track and field program.

Head coach Rick Sloan announced that Lombardi, who for the past year has been an assistant at Penn State, will coach the throwers.

Lombardi, from Renton, Wash., held the WSU women’s outdoor shot-put record of 48 feet, 2-3/4 inches from 1981-86 and was a national qualifier in 1982.

Lombardi was a pioneer in the women’s hammer throw, one of six competing in the event for the first time in a collegiate women’s dual meet against Montana on March 27, 1982, in Pullman. She threw 117-3 that day, and the following week set an unofficial collegiate women’s world record of 125-9 in Eugene, Ore.

She was a graduate assistant coach at WSU in 1983-86 and from 1987-91 was an assistant at Iowa. She currently also serves as the USA Track and Field assistant women’s hammer development coordinator.
