Idaho Splits Pair At Portland Tourney

Idaho responded to a rare volleyball loss on Saturday by defeating UC-Irvine 11-15, 15-3, 15-4, 15-6 at the Portland Invitational.

Idaho (6-2) began the day with a 15-13, 15-11, 15-9 loss to Cal State Sacramento.

Vandals senior Tzvetelina Yanchulova had 54 kills, 25 digs and five blocks on the day. Vandals setter Lynne Hyland finished the tournament with 180 assists.

Sarah Silvernail had a career-high 11 blocks, and added 16 kills and 11 digs to lead 19th-ranked Washington State (6-0) to a 15-6, 15-4, 16-18, 15-9 win over the host Cowboys (4-2) at the Wyoming Tournament in Laramie.

Elis Arias added 15 kills and 16 digs for the Cougars, who hadn’t lost a game this year until the third one against Wyoming. Setter Stephanie Papke had a career-high 53 assists.

Boise State, behind the play of outside hitters Jill Fleming of Reardan, Cyndi Neece and Amber Woodcock, rolled to the title at the fourth annual Spikeoff Spokane tournament at Gonzaga University. The Broncos (5-3) defeated the host Bulldogs 15-9, 10-15, 15-8, 15-9, then wrapped up the title by dropping Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo 19-17, 15-7, 12-15, 15-13.Fleming, a senior middle blocker, was named the tournament most valuable player after she had 38 kills, 22 digs and 19 blocks.

GU’s Wendy Wilson, of North Central High, had 42 kills and made the all-tourney team. The Bulldogs (1-7) also lost to Bowling Green.

Football

Mike Hofheins caught 10 passes for 218 yards, including a pair of second-half touchdowns, as Whitworth’s alumni defeated the current Pirates 20-19 by holding them scoreless after intermission.Brion Williams and Tim Rust of the current Pirates combined for 100 yards rushing and a pair of TDs.

Women’s soccer

A second-half goal by midfielder Erin Martinez lifted 11th-ranked Santa Clara (2-0-1) over 17th-ranked Washington State 1-0 in a nonconference match at Pullman.

The Cougars (1-1-1) are 0-3 lifetime against the Broncos.

Cross country

The Montana men and the WSU women won team titles at Idaho’s invitational in Moscow.

Whitman’s Jessica Bissonette won the women’s 5,000 meters in 18 minutes, 48.9 seconds. Idaho’s women finished second, behind thirdplace Maggie Hurst (19:23).

George Loucaides won the men’s 4-miler in 20:44.8 and led WSU to second place.

Bowling

Greg Thomas of Old Town, Idaho, stands ninth after 10 qualifying games at the Wenatchee PBA Open at Eastmont Lanes. Thomas averaged 225.6. Leader Craig Tuholski of Washougal, Wash., averaged 236.2.
